Linux and Apache
Intech's experience with UNIX system management enabled us to carefully evalutate
all of our options when it came to selecting a webserver platform.
Linux
Over 60% of the webservers in the world run the Linux operating system. It is fast,
reliable and is available for a broad range of hardware. If performance is an issue
then Linux can be run upon some powerful software platforms. Alternatively, many
cheap Linux processors can be clustered together to increase processing power - a
technique that is used by several major companies, including Google.
Apache
The Apache Software Foundation's open source webserver has a number of
strong selling points in its favour, all of which have contributed to making it
by far the most popular webserber on the Internet:
Apache has been the most popular webserver on the Internet since April
of 1996. The May 2003 Netcraft Web Server
Survey found that 62% of the web sites on the Internet are using Apache, thus
making it more widely used than all other webservers combined.
Apache Is Fast
Benchmark tests have shown that Apache is significantly faster than most webservers
on the market, and although there are faster servers available at a price, Apache
is used on a number of high profile sites without any performance issues.
Apache Is Flexible
Apache has a modular structure that provides it with the capability to handle any
number of tasks. In addition all of the modules can be customised to handle specific
requirements. These features combined with the ability to add new modules as required
mean that Apache is capable of taking on any challenge.
Apache Is Cheap
Actually Apache is free. Running under the Linux operating system there are absolutely
no license charges for using Apache. The software is available as a free download and is
installed as part of a default Linux installation. Please contact
us if you require more information.
