SCO Unix - Linux Migration
Background
SCO Unix is still used by millions around the world. Many still use the
Open Server platform as an application server. Intech have many customers
on Open Server systems and still actively support the platform and continue
to develop under SCO.
Linux is now accepted as a suitable platform for business solutions -
particularly for application and web servers. It is very similar to SCO Unix
and other flavours of Unix. Intech staff develop and maintain systems on both
platforms.
Why Change?
Linux is under active development and offers many new features and facilities.
It is available from a number of distributors and can be freely copied. The
source code is available if the need arises. Many applications and packages can
be obtained under an Open Source license and are often better than some of their
commercial competitors.
How Do I Change?
There is an application binary interface module under Linux. This allows SCO binaries
to run under Linux. They often appear to run faster than under SCO! Most standard
applications will port easily in this way. Some applications with low level
interfaces may not port easily but most applications will. Typically you would :-
- Set up a test platform under Linux and copy your environment including directories,
permissions, accounts, start up and close down scripts etc.
- Copy across your application binaries and a full system test.
- Roll out the new platform to your user base - but continue to develop under SCO.
- At the completion of the roll out switch development to Linux.
